Armstrong: Self-Custody Needed to Reach 1 Billion Crypto Users

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong said self-custody wallets are the only scalable way to bring crypto to over 1 billion users, improving global onboarding and supporting agent-based apps.

Brian Armstrong, chief executive of Coinbase, wrote on social media on July 18, 2026, that self-custody wallets are the only way to scale cryptocurrency adoption to more than 1 billion users. He argued self-custody lowers regional friction and enables simpler onboarding outside developed markets.

Armstrong contrasted self-custody with custodial apps such as Coinbase’s, saying custodial services have worked well in developed countries but require local regulatory compliance and teams. He noted the United States represents roughly 4% of the world population and wrote that broader reach requires a model that “scales like software rather than a separate regulated entity + local team per country.”

He linked self-custody to agentic adoption, a term he used for autonomous software agents that execute tasks on behalf of users. Armstrong wrote that agentic adoption benefits from self-custody because it gives agents a clearer way to access funds to complete assigned tasks. In the post he wrote, “To get to 1b+ people benefiting from the open financial system, self custody is the only way. Lower friction onboarding, available globally, scales like software rather than a separate regulated entity + local team per country.” He also wrote, “Even in developed countries, self-custody is very important for economic freedom.”

The remarks coincided with leadership changes at Base, an Ethereum layer-2 network incubated by Coinbase. Jesse Pollak stepped down and handed control to Jordan Fish, known in crypto circles as Cobie. Pollak called Base’s earlier emphasis on social features a “wrong bet” and wrote the project will refocus on trading, payments and agent-driven activity on a single chain.

Pollak wrote the team plans to “build Base into the blockchain for global finance and do everything we can to be the place that the world’s money settles over the next century.” Under Fish’s leadership, Base is expected to prioritize trading, payments and agents.

Self-custody means users hold their own private keys and control funds without a third-party custodian. Supporters say it reduces reliance on centralized providers and can simplify cross-border access because wallets can operate without a separate legal presence in each country. Critics point to security risks, a steeper user experience and questions about regulatory oversight.

Coinbase is the largest U.S.-based cryptocurrency exchange. The company offers custodial products and develops Base. Armstrong framed self-custody as central to reaching a much larger global user base while Base shifts focus toward financial use cases and agent-led applications.
