Venus Protocol user loses $27M to phishing attack

On September 2, a Venus Protocol user lost about $27 million in a phishing attack, according to analytics firm PeckShield.
Researchers said the victim signed a malicious transaction that granted attackers access to their assets. The funds were then transferred to the attacker’s wallet (0x7fd8…202a).
Initial suspicions pointed to a possible contract update, but it was later confirmed as a phishing attack.
Amid speculation of a possible hack, the Venus team stressed that the protocol itself was not compromised. “Venus Protocol was not exploited. The attack targeted a user. The smart contract is secure,” the project said in a statement.
The platform briefly paused operations while investigating the incident.

Venus Protocol has faced several incidents in the past:
This time, it wasn’t a bug or exploit – it was a phishing attack that tricked a single user.
- In 2021, hackers exploited oracle vulnerabilities, causing losses of over $100 million.
- In 2022, a liquidation setting error cost the protocol about $11 million.
- In 2023, users reported a brief suspension of service after a sharp drop in BNB triggered cascading liquidations.
