U.S. gov shutdown may end within days — Hassett

Trump adviser Kevin Hassett said the government shutdown, which has paralyzed federal agencies since October 1, could end soon, allowing crypto regulatory processes to resume.
The White House expects the U.S. government shutdown, now in its third week, to end by the close of this week, according to Trump economic adviser Kevin Hassett. Speaking on CNBC, Hassett said moderate Democrats appear ready to strike a deal.
“I think the Schumer shutdown is likely to end sometime this week. The moderate Democrats will move forward and get us an open government, at which point we could negotiate whatever policies they want to negotiate with regular order,” Hassett said, blaming Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer for the crisis.
Despite Hassett’s optimism, Polymarket data shows traders assign just a 26% probability that the shutdown will end in the coming days, with most expecting the stalemate to persist through the end of October.

Hassett - a longtime crypto advocate who holds more than $1 million in Coinbase stock - noted that the shutdown has directly stalled key regulatory processes in the crypto industry. Several cryptocurrency ETF applications, including those tied to Litecoin, XRP, and Solana, have been frozen at the SEC amid the suspension of agency operations. I also fueled uncertainty in the crypto market and curbed institutional investor activity as firms await clarity from the Trump administration and the SEC.
The shutdown has also delayed consideration of the BITCOIN Act, which aims to define Bitcoin’s legal status and establish a national reserve of digital assets. Debate on the bill will resume once the government reopens.
On October 22, Senate Democrats plan to host a roundtable with representatives from Coinbase, Circle, and Ripple to discuss the framework for future crypto regulation.
