Polkadot upgrade 2025 – SDK 2509 lands early October

Polkadot will finalize three pillars – asynchronous backing, agile coretime, and elastic scaling – culminating in the Polkadot SDK 2509 release targeted for early October 2025. The upgrade also brings Ethereum-compatible contracts on Polkadot Hub and a RISC-V-based PolkaVM for next-gen smart contracts.

Polkadot calls this a staged upgrade that wraps with SDK 2509. Parity set out the technical pillars and the early October window. Forum posts clarify production deployments depend on collator and parachain upgrades to 2509. The transition moves features from “enabled” to “used in production.”

Asynchronous Backing reduces block times from around 12 seconds to 6, while expanding the block size by four times. That change pushes throughput up by as much as 8–10× per parachain. Agile Coretime replaces the old slot auctions with a pay-as-you-go model. Projects no longer need to lock up large amounts of capital to secure a parachain. Instead, they can rent blockspace for a short term or buy in bulk when planning bigger workloads. This feature is designed tolower the entry cost for new teams and make launching faster and less risky.

Elastic Scaling lets Polkadot parachains borrow extra cores when they need them. A DeFi protocol hit by a liquidity rush or a game hosting a major event can instantly draw more blockspace. When the surge ends, resources return to the pool. The setup feels similar to cloud computing but happens at the consensus layer, giving projects flexibility without wasted spend.  

On the smart contract side, Polkadot Hub now supports Ethereum compatibility.
