Nvidia’s Blackwell chip may be a topic of Trump-Xi talks

U.S. President Donald Trump said he might talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping about Nvidia’s advanced Blackwell AI chip during their expected meeting on October 30.
Trump made the remark to reporters aboard Air Force One en route to Gyeongju, South Korea, calling Blackwell a “super-duper” chip. Restrictions on sales of high-end U.S. AI chips to China remain a key issue in this year’s trade negotiations, while Trump said he’s optimistic about talks with Xi.
The planned discussion comes as Washington continues to bar exports of Nvidia’s most advanced AI processors to China on national-security grounds, while Beijing has pressed domestic firms to source and develop local alternatives. Despite that push, Chinese developers still seek Nvidia hardware amid limited supply from local rivals.
On October 28, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said the company has not applied for U.S. licenses to ship its newest chips to China, citing China’s current stance and noting the firm relies on access to that market to fund U.S. research and development. “They’ve made it very clear that they don’t want Nvidia to be there right now,” said Huang, adding, “I hope that will change in the future because I think China is a very important market.”
During Nvidia’s GTC (GPU Technology Conference) in Washington, Huang revealed that Blackwell AI chips are now in full production in Arizona. For the first time, Nvidia is manufacturing its top GPUs in the U.S.; all earlier production was done in Taiwan. Huang also announced a $1 billion investment in Nokia to develop AI‑native telecom infrastructure, as well as a $5 billion investment in Intel, marking strategic steps into communications and PC/AI hardware convergence.
In his speech, Huang said Trump “deserves enormous credit” for recognizing that the U.S. tech sector needs more support to lead in AI and for encouraging companies to bring production back to America.
Nvidia stock hit a new record high following the event, closing at $201.03, up 4.98% in the last 24 hours. Nvidia is currently the most valuable publicly traded company, with a market cap of over $4.8 trillion, according to companiesmarketcap.com.
