Metaplanet buys $11.7M in Bitcoin, now they own 19K BTC

Tokyo company Metaplanet bought 103 more Bitcoin for $11.7 million on August 25, 2025. The firm now owns 18,991 Bitcoin total and wants to reach 30,000 by the end of 2025.
The firm paid about $113,491 for each Bitcoin in the latest purchase. Its crypto stash is now worth around $1.95 billion. The company reports its holdings have grown 479.5% this year and 29.1% in the past three months.
The purchase was part of a weekly buying plan. Before this transaction, the firm had bought 775 Bitcoin worth $93 million in a recent deal. The company gets money for these purchases by selling new shares and using stock purchase rights.
The Japanese firm treats BTC as its main backup money. Management has set targets for holdings: 30,000 Bitcoin by the end of 2025, 100,000 by 2026, and 210,000 by 2027. The final target would equal about 1% of Bitcoin's total supply.
The company paid an average of $102,712 for each Bitcoin it owns. Among all public companies worldwide, it ranks seventh for Bitcoin holdings. In Japan, the firm owns more Bitcoin than any other company.
Financial index company FTSE Russell moved the firm from small company status to mid-size company status in September. This change put it in the FTSE Japan Index and the FTSE All-World Index.
Company President Simon Gerovich wrote on social media: "Metaplanet has acquired 103 BTC for ~$11.7 million at ~$113,491 per bitcoin and has achieved BTC Yield of 479.5% YTD 2025."
The company used to build hotels but changed its business to focus on buying Bitcoin in 2024. People call it "Asia's MicroStrategy" because it copies the Bitcoin buying strategy of American company MicroStrategy. The firm's stock price has risen sharply since it started focusing on Bitcoin.
Management uses three ways to get money for Bitcoin purchases: selling new company stock, selling bonds, and using stock purchase rights. The company plans to open a Bitcoin Hotel in Tokyo and wants to buy other businesses using its Bitcoin as security for loans.
