A former cryptocurrency trader in France was kidnapped and tortured near Paris, but released after his captors failed to collect a €10,000 ransom.
According to the local newspaper, Le Parisien, Alexander, a 35-year-old former trader, was abducted between Paris and Saint-Germain-en-Laye earlier this week. Police launched an investigation Tuesday night after the victim’s acquaintance in Algeria received a disturbing photo showing Alexander on his knees with his hands tied.

Authorities traced his phone to the 10th arrondissement of Paris. He was later recognized while returning home after being freed, with police describing him as visibly injured and in shock. Forensic teams collected evidence from his clothing and skin in an attempt to identify the attackers.

The kidnapping is the tenth crypto-related case reported in France in recent months, out of 32 similar crimes worldwide. Investigators say the growing number of incidents reflects the country’s rising exposure to cryptocurrency-linked crime.

This case follows other high-profile kidnappings. In June, French police arrested five suspects for abducting the father of a cryptocurrency entrepreneur. Last month, a Brussels court sentenced three men to 12 years in prison for kidnapping the wife of Belgian crypto investor Stéphane Winkel.

Authorities across Europe and beyond have issued warnings about the risks faced by cryptocurrency users. Police stress that criminals are increasingly targeting traders and investors due to the perceived anonymity and value of digital assets.
