Trump calls feud with Elon Musk a 'very stupid' moment

On Air Force One, US president Donald Trump said he will 'always like' Elon Musk and called their rift a 'very stupid' moment for Musk.
Aboard Air Force One, President Donald Trump expressed warm feelings toward Elon Musk, calling their recent feud a “very stupid” moment for the tech executive, Independent reports. The remarks followed their joint appearance at Charlie Kirk’s memorial on September 21 at State Farm Stadium in Arizona.
“It’s good with him. I like Elon; I’ve always liked Elon,” Trump told reporters traveling with him. “He had a bad spell, he had a bad period, he had a bad moment. It was a stupid moment in his life, very stupid. I like Elon and I suspect I’ll always like him.”
The Arizona gathering drew more than 90,000 attendees. Musk later posted a photo with Trump captioned, “For Charlie.” During his onstage remarks, Trump spoke about feeling “hate” toward his enemies and argued that political “violence largely comes from the left.”
Trump and Musk were close during the 2024 campaign. Musk contributed $290 million to Trump’s reelection effort. After Trump took office, Musk was appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency, a new office named for the cryptocurrency Dogecoin. Following reductions across several federal agencies, Musk turned to state politics in 2025, spending $23 million in an unsuccessful bid to help Republican Brad Schimel win a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court.
The relationship broke down over Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill,” which proposed higher federal borrowing. As tensions rose, Musk, who appeared with a bruise under his eye, left the White House. At the time, Trump privately referred to Musk as a “big-time drug addict,” and the two traded barbs online.
The dispute escalated when Musk alleged in a now-archived post that Trump appeared in the “Epstein files.” Musk later apologized in June.
