Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong revealed that over 40% of the platform’s code is now written by artificial intelligence, and he wants that number to reach 50% by October.
According to Armstrong, the percentage of AI-generated lines of code at Coinbase has more than doubled since April.

“Obviously it needs to be reviewed and understood, and not all areas of the business can use AI-generated code. But we should be using it responsibly as much as we possibly can,” he posted on X.

Armstrong’s comments follow Coinbase’s recent push to transform its staff into “AI-Natives,” signaling the company is not aiming to replace its 4,200 employees outright but to boost productivity. Engineers are increasingly relying on AI tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Cursor to speed up development.
“This has enabled profound success stories that weren’t possible 12 months ago, like single engineers refactoring, upgrading or building new codebases in days instead of months,” Armstrong explained.

Last month, Armstrong disclosed on a podcast that he had fired engineers who refused to adopt AI tools after issuing a company-wide mandate requiring their use.

Coinbase still plans to expand its technical team, with nearly half of its 350 job openings targeting engineers and developers. Of these, 93 positions are backend engineering roles, many of which mention AI expertise in the job title or description. Non-technical hiring is led by customer experience roles, with 56 current openings.
