BBVA Spain adopts Ripple Custody for crypto services

Spanish bank BBVA will use Ripple's digital asset custody technology to store and manage crypto and tokenized assets for retail customers. The agreement builds on existing partnerships between the companies.
This came a few months after the rollout of BTC and ETH trading and custody for retail customers. The bank received approval from Spain's National Securities Market Commission (CNMV) in March 2025 to offer crypto custody and execution services.
The integration allows BBVA to provide end-to-end custody services directly to customers through its mobile app while meeting security, operational and regulatory requirements under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework.
Cassie Craddock, Ripple's Managing Director for Europe, said MiCA regulation enables banks across Europe to launch digital asset services that customers want. Francisco Maroto, BBVA's Head of Digital Assets, said Ripple's solution meets high security and operational standards, allowing BBVA to provide custody services directly rather than through third parties.
“BBVA has long been one of the region’s most innovative banks and we're proud to support its ambitions with the most secure and compliant digital asset technology on the market,”added Cassie Craddock.
Ripple Custody will help BBVA scale its existing crypto and tokenized-asset custody infrastructure. Ripple holds more than 60 regulatory licenses and registrations globally and designed its technology specifically for financial institutions with strict compliance and operational controls.
The crypto company already provides custody technology to BBVA Switzerland and to Garanti BBVA in Turkey, so a launch in Spain will simply expand BBVA’s crypto services reach into what are essentially new markets.
BBVA frames its crypto program as part of a broader digitization strategy. The bank has begun to focus more on retail clients who want access to virtual assets while staying within the traditional banking system.
