American Express launches NFT passport stamps for travellers

American Express, one of the world’s largest payment networks, has introduced NFT passport stamps and digital tools for travelers.
Eligible U.S. cardholders can receive NFT stamps through the new “Amex Passport” feature for their international trips. The stamps are digital collectibles that cardholders automatically earn from trips taken over the past two years and can save on their phones or share on social media.
American Express partnered with Coinbase’s Base Network for the initiative. The tokens are stored on the blockchain as ERC-721 NFTs, have no monetary value, and a digital wallet runs in the background, so users don’t need to interact with blockchain tools directly. The tokens are simply keepsakes for trips, and creating an Amex Passport or collecting the stamps is free. The feature will be available for iOS users on September 18, and for Android users several weeks later.
In a press release, American Express shared results from a recent survey showing that 81% of respondents wanted an all-in-one app for easier booking and travel inspiration. Amex Passport is designed to enhance travel planning and offer a more personalized experience.
Luke Gebb, Executive Vice President at Amex Digital Labs, explained that the digital stamps are intended as keepsakes rather than official travel documents.
Part of the magic of travel is reminiscing about past getaways, and commemorative keepsakes are a powerful way for travelers to relive their favorite trips. As physical passport stamps continue to disappear, Amex Passport creates an opportunity for Card Members to celebrate their travels, said Gebb.
American Express has previously tested blockchain technology and partnered with blockchain companies for various initiatives. In June 2025, Amex teamed up with Coinbase to launch the "Coinbase One Card" on the American Express Network, a credit card that allows U.S. customers to earn Bitcoin rewards on their purchases.
